Christopher May

Christopher May is the founder, director and primary curator behind TIE, The International Experimental Cinema Exposition, which was conceived in Telluride, Colorado, 2000, during his mid-twenties.

In addition to his work with TIE, May has curated film programs for cultural institutions in the United States and abroad. He has presented film seminars and guest lectured for several universities, film societies and colleges including the San Francisco Art Institute, First Person Cinema / University of Colorado at Boulder, Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, and San Francisco Cinematheque. May has served as a nominator for the Rockefeller Foundation's Media Artist Fellowship for two years and served as a consultant for several other artist grant programs, including the MacArthur Foundation and the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts.

May's programming has been recognized worldwide for the unique filmic quality, challenging nature and international scope. As a child, Christopher spent much of his time in the cinema, which sparked his interest in avant-garde film. Later, Christopher participated in several underground film programs in Argentina where he lived for two years. Upon his return, he became a loyal attendee of the Stan Brakhage Sunday evening film salons in Boulder, Colorado. A graduate of the University of Colorado in Cultural Studies, May's academic background has influenced the unique texture of his curatorial projects. Crediting the wide scope of his programming efforts to his continuing investigation of international avant-garde film, Christopher has researched the work of individual filmmakers, presented global-wide conferences and curated major festivals in Colorado, Canada and Uruguay.

May's current projects include curating a film exhibit in Istanbul, Turkey and programs for several European and South American cultural institutions, where he is breaking new curatorial ground within these regions. Aside from his work via the realms experimental and avant-garde film, Christopher is the programmer for the Classic Arthouse Series in Denver, Colorado.

In addition to river-rafting, snowmobiling, playing tennis, filmmaking, mountain-biking and general trouble-making, Christopher volunteers for at-risk youth organizations in the Colorado region where he designed and implemented a successful experimental filmmaking camp which is being developed as a template for non-profit programs around the United States.
